GATES TRAINING: Failed vs New Tensioner

GATES TRAINING: Failed vs New Tensioner

A tensioner serves two purposes: 1) to maintain the correct amount of tension on the belt and 2) to dampen the impulses from the engine as each cylinder fires or as accessories turn on or off. The tensioner on the left has lost it dampening ability and is now hammering the accessory immediately next to it (in this case, an alternator). The tensioner on the right shows how a new tensioner on the same system smooths out these impulses.
